Why Spring Is the Best Time to Soft Wash Your Home in Windsor-Essex

After a Southern Ontario winter, your home's exterior has been through a lot. Road salt dust, freeze-thaw cycles, months of trapped moisture — and now that spring is here, all of it is coming out of hiding. Algae starts blooming on north-facing walls. Black streaks reappear on the soffits. The siding that looked fine under snow suddenly looks like it hasn't been touched in years.

This is the best time of year to soft wash your home or business. This is why they call it spring cleaning!

What is soft washing?

Soft washing is a low-pressure exterior cleaning method that uses water and a biodegradable cleaning solution to break down and rinse away organic growth like algae, mould, mildew, and lichen. Unlike pressure washing, it doesn't blast the surface — it soaks in, kills the growth at the root, and rinses it clean.

Think of it like a "touchless" car wash but with low pressure.

For vinyl siding, painted surfaces, stucco, and anything with texture, soft washing is the right approach. Pressure washing those surfaces can force water behind siding, strip paint, and cause damage that isn't immediately visible. Soft washing gets the job done without the risk.

Why spring specifically?

A few reasons:

First, organic growth is at its most visible right now. The wet conditions coming out of winter are exactly what mould and algae thrive in, and they're actively spreading before summer dries things out. Treating it early stops it from taking hold deeper into the material.

Second, you're about to spend more time outside. A clean exterior makes a real difference — for your own enjoyment of your property and for curb appeal. Every time you walk by that dirty part of the house it bugs you a little whether you know it at the time or not. Having it cleaned will be a relief!

Third, if you're planning any outdoor painting, deck work, or landscaping this spring, a clean exterior first means you're starting from the right baseline. Soft washing before painting prep, in particular, is a step many people skip and then wonder why their paint doesn't adhere properly.

What does it typically cover?

A full exterior soft wash at Richardson Clean covers your siding from foundation to soffit, any algae or staining on brick or stucco, fascia and soffits, eavestrough (gutter) exteriors and general grime from the winter season. We can also treat garage doors, fences, and deck surfaces depending on the material.

If you've noticed black streaks running down from your roof line, green patches on shaded walls, or a general dull grey look to your siding — that's all soft wash territory.

Not sure how dirty or dusty things are? Take your garden hose and rinse a section with low pressure - if your hose is making a harsh noise on the siding - that's too hard. Is it better? A professional softwash service will make it look 5x better than that.
